Finials

Finials are great fun to spot on days out in country villages. They are constructed by bunching and tying straw into simple shapes while more complicated designs such as this Jack and Jill (photographed in Kilmersdon) have straw, held in place with a wire structure. When straw was used as a main covering for dwellings, haystacks and hayricks, finials were a lot more common. Country folklore says that the designs were made to scare away birds and witches, hence they would be of animals or of religious significance. Now they are much more diverse.
