Split Straw Stars (Strohsterne)
This is an art form from the continent and it is rarely practiced in the UK. One of the reasons offered for this is that it originated as a winter activity. In Summer, straw hat making was popular. In the winter odd bits of straw would be made into straw stars and hung on Christmas trees. Decorated trees were not popular inthe UK until Victorian times when other materials were more readily available than straw.
The stars are made with a 'former'. Mine is homemade. The technique is relatively simple but there are endless variations. The use of coloured straws makes stunning decorations.
